The Mickleham and Westhumble Horticultural Society is the gardening society for Mickleham and Westhumble and is affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

We provide friendly, local support and encouragement for gardening based on a tradition spanning more a century.

We:

  • organise village shows (in July in even years and in April and September in odd years—the order changed after the pandemic);
  • offer good discounts, through bulk purchase, of manure and peat-free compost;
  • hold plant sales at the shows with plants at very reasonable prices;
  • support the local Garden Shed club that provides many fascinating gardening events—Garden Shed members can also enter the Shows (except the gardens section);
  • publish articles in the Parish Magazine and local newspapers;
  • provide a gardening WhatsApp group (see below);
  • support a range of other gardening activities for the community (such as Open Garden days).

We have around 200 members.

Village Shows

In odd-numbered years the Society holds shows in April (together with the AGM) and September. In even-numbered years a plant sale is held in April (together with the AGM) and a show is held in July.

In 2025, the shows will be held on 26th April and 13th September.  The Spring Show (on 26th April) starts at 10:30 with the AGM at 11:15. There will also be teas and coffees and a plant sale.

The shows are held in Mickleham Village Hall, Dell Close, Mickleham. They are open to anyone living within two miles of Mickleham Church and to children attending a school or nursery in the same area. Everyone is welcome whatever their standard.

WhatsApp group

The Society runs a WhatsApp group of members interested in exchanging views on gardening topics.  The idea is to promote an online community with a practical outcome:

  • swapping plants, excess vegetable seeds or seedlings
  • providing advice on problems or other aspects of garden life, how to encourage wildlife or eradicate pests—in fact anything garden related
  • supporting sustainability by helping members to reuse and share gardening equipment and tools (eg unused plant pots)
  • providing reminders about local gardening events (and compost and other offers).

Note that the group will be solely about gardening. It will not be a forum for other topics.

The group will be open to all members of the Mickleham and Westhumble Horticultural Society. Membership of the group will be managed by the MWHS committee.

If you are interested, please send an email to Judith Long (the MWHS Membership Secretary) at judith.long2@btinternet.com with your name and mobile number. The MWHS will only use your number for the WhatsApp group.
